The beginning of the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering was the creation in the academic year 1946/1947, on the initiative of prof. Stanisław Turczynowicz, the Melioration Section, at the Agricultural Department of the Warsaw University of Life Sciences. In 1948/1949 this section was transformed into the Department of Water Melioration, then in 1950/1951 into the Department of Agricultural Melioration, and in 1954/1955 into the Department of Water Melioration. The faculty operated under this name until the 1989/1990 academic year, when it was transformed into the Faculty of Melioration and Environmental Engineering, and in 2000 changed its name to the Faculty of Engineering and Environmental Management.
For many years, the department struggled with enormous difficulties in terms of premises. Lectures and exercises for students were held in rooms located in various parts of Warsaw. Only in 1971 the faculty moved to a newly erected building at ul. Nowoursynowska 159. In the building there are properly prepared lecture halls and teaching and research laboratories equipped with modern apparatus. Since October 2003, the faculty has the opportunity to conduct classes in a newly built, well-equipped building, located directly next to the faculty seat.
In 2010, the infrastructure of the department was enriched with a new building of the Water Center – a complex of laboratories equipped with modern research equipment. At the beginning of 2011, the name of the Faculty of Engineering and Environmental Management was changed for the last time to the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering. We have the right to award doctoral and postdoctoral degrees in the field of agricultural sciences, and doctorate degrees in the field of technical sciences, which allows us to educate, among others, Others. own teaching and research staff.
The organization of the faculty was improved throughout its existence. Initially, they were institute structures, cathedral structures since 2008, and since 2019 the units are formed by the Institute of Environmental Engineering, the Institute of Civil Engineering and the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering. During the faculty’s existence, periods with different duration of studies and different modes of educating students can be distinguished. Based on the experience gained, the study programs are constantly being improved.
From the 2003/04 academic year, the faculty, as well as the entire WULS-SGGW, switched to the two-cycle study system in accordance with the Bologna Agreement. This required the development of new study programs. They are in line with the applicable teaching standards, approved by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. Due to changes in education standards, the programs are subject to adjustments introduced by the Discipline Councils.
Currently, the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering educates students in five fields of study:
in two modes: stationary and extramural (in two fields of study: Construction and Environmental Engineering).
